The Science: hyaluronic acid

Sodium hyaluronate (commonly known as "hyaluronic acid"), is a carbohydrate, more specifically a mucopolysaccharide occurring naturally throughout the human body. It can be several thousands of sugars (carbohydrates) long. When not bound to other molecules, it binds to water giving it a stiff viscous quality similar to “Jello”. It's function in the body is, amongst other things, to bind water and to lubricate movable parts of the body such as joints and muscles.

What hyaluronic acid actually does

Muscles and connective tissue are found everywhere in the human body. Major functions include binding, support, protection, and insulation. These tissues are made up of tiny little cords, which in turn are made of collagen and elastin. Hyaluronic acid seperates and insulates each one of these fibers, allowing them to stay hydrated and keep their "stretchy" properties. Such support allows the muscles to support tension and abuse that comes with physical workouts and exertion.
